The Langstroth hive
A box of hanging frames spaced so the bees leave the gaps clear, which lets a keeper lift out a single comb without destroying anything. The design most of the world's managed colonies now live in.

The default managed hive across most of the world today, and directly observable. Variants differ enough by country that 'a Langstroth' means somewhat different dimensions in different places.
The problem it solved
In a fixed-comb hive the bees attach comb to the walls, so inspecting a colony means cutting, and harvesting often means destroying. Everything difficult about pre-modern beekeeping follows from that: you cannot see whether a colony is queenright, you cannot check for disease, you cannot take honey without damage, and you cannot move comb between colonies.
The solution is a gap. Bees leave a passage of roughly a centimetre clear for movement; anything narrower they fill with propolis and anything wider they build comb across. Build a hive whose frames hang with that clearance on every side and the combs stay separate, liftable and reusable.
Who did what, and when
- Movable comb before movable framesBar hives, in which comb hangs from a removable top bar, are far older than any of this and are still made — the Greek movable-comb hive of around 1800 is the usual European example. A comb you can lift is not the same as a frame you can handle, but it is the first half of the idea.
- Frames before LangstrothPetro Prokopovych in Ukraine built a hive with removable frames in the 1810s, and Jan Dzierżon in Silesia was working with movable bars and writing about colony biology in the 1830s and 1840s. Neither is a footnote: frames existed and were used before the patent.
- The patent, 1852Langstroth's contribution was the systematic application of the spacing — frames suspended from above with the clearance maintained on all sides, so the whole box could be opened from the top. He patented it in the United States in 1852.
- The book, 1853The Hive and the Honey-Bee published the reasoning a year later, and the book did at least as much as the patent to spread the design. It is also, being his own account, an interested party's version of his own priority.
- Adoption, decades laterA patent is not an industry. Frame hives spread unevenly over the second half of the nineteenth century and only became the default alongside the extractor and comb foundation, which made the frames worth having. In much of the world fixed-comb hives remained normal well into the twentieth century, and in some places still are.
What it changed, and what it did not
Together with the centrifugal extractor and wax foundation it made non-destructive harvesting routine, colony inspection possible, and management of disease and queens practical. Almost everything about commercial beekeeping depends on being able to open a hive and look.
Cultural significance
The hive that made colonies inspectable, and therefore the precondition for commercial beekeeping, queen breeding, disease management and pollination contracting.
What this page does not claim
That Langstroth invented movable frames or discovered bee space alone. Prokopovych built frame hives in the 1810s and Dzierżon was working with movable bars in the 1830s and 1840s; what Langstroth patented was the systematic top-opening application of the spacing. Nor is the frame hive an improvement in every setting — see the note on the traditions that did not adopt it.
