Producing queens and bees as products in their own right — grafted queens, packages in the post, nucleus colonies — which is what lets an industry replace its losses on a schedule.

Deciding which larva becomes a queen

A colony rears a queen by feeding a young female larva differently. Queen rearing takes that over: larvae of a chosen age are transferred into artificial queen cups, given to a colony organised to raise them, and the resulting cells are distributed to mating nuclei. It is delicate, seasonal work and it is a distinct trade.

Controlled mating is the harder half. A queen mates in flight with many drones, so ancestry is difficult to control without either isolated mating stations or instrumental insemination — a technique developed in the twentieth century and used mainly in breeding programmes rather than in routine production.

Bees as freight

  • Mated queens, shipped individually in small cages with attendant bees, by post and courier, internationally where regulation permits.
  • Package bees: a measured weight of workers with a caged queen, sold to start or replace colonies.
  • Nucleus colonies, or nucs: a small working colony on a few frames, with brood already present, which establishes faster than a package.

This trade is why a commercial operation can plan around losses. It is also a route by which parasites, pathogens and genetics move between regions, which is why importing bees is regulated in most countries and prohibited in some.

Breeding for what

Selection has targeted honey yield, temperament, swarming tendency, overwintering and — increasingly since varroa arrived — traits associated with mite resistance, including hygienic behaviour. Progress on resistance is real and slower than the marketing around it, because the trait is not simple and mating is hard to control.

Pressures and conservation

Live bee movement is a documented pathway for parasites and pathogens between regions, and is the reason import controls exist.

What this page does not claim

That mite-resistant stock is available as a solved product, or that queen breeding has narrowed managed-bee genetics to a demonstrated crisis point. Resistance breeding is real and partial; the genetic-base concern is recognised and is not the same as a measured collapse.
