Carniolan honey bee
The second most widely kept honey bee subspecies, and the one most European beekeepers choose over Italian stock. Carniolans come from the eastern Alps and the Balkans, and they are adapted to a short intense season: explosive spring build-up, rapid contraction in a dearth, frugal winter consumption — and a swarming instinct that gives beekeepers more work than any other trait.
Can it sting?
Very gentle on the comb, and generally rated alongside or slightly above Italian stock for calmness. It defends its nest like any honey bee and is unremarkable in that respect.
How to recognise it
Darker than Italian bees, greyish-brown rather than golden, with narrow pale bands and dense grey hair. Slightly slimmer in build, with a slightly longer tongue than most subspecies — which lets it work red clover more successfully than Italian stock can.

Lifecycle
- Explosive spring build-upResponds very rapidly to the first forage, expanding faster than almost any other subspecies — which is exactly what a short alpine season demands.
- SwarmingThat same responsiveness produces a strong swarming instinct. Carniolan colonies build queen cells readily and a beekeeper who misses a weekly inspection in May will very likely lose a swarm.
- Rapid contractionCuts brood rearing sharply when forage stops, conserving stores. This frugality is the trait that suits it to hard winters.
Where it lives and what it does
- Habitat
- Managed apiaries across Europe and beyond, and feral colonies in the eastern Alps and Balkans.
- Distribution
- Native to Slovenia, Austria, Croatia, Hungary, Serbia and the eastern Alps, and now the dominant managed subspecies across central and eastern Europe and widely used in North America.
- Behaviour
- Responsive to the point of volatility — it reads conditions quickly and acts on them, which is why it builds up so fast and swarms so readily. It also has a slightly longer tongue than other subspecies and forages better on red clover, and it flies in cooler, duller weather than Italian bees.
- Pollination role
- An effective crop pollinator, with the practical advantage of flying in poorer weather than Italian stock. Its swarming tendency makes it more management-intensive on a large pollination contract.
Very high, with a marginal advantage in cool weather and on longer-corolla legumes.
Honey
Stores a harvestable surplus
Excellent, and its frugality means more of what it collects is left as surplus rather than consumed in autumn brood rearing. Slovenia's beekeeping tradition, built on this subspecies, is on the UNESCO intangible heritage list.
Relationship with people
- How people interact with it
- Slovenia's national bee, protected by law there — the country prohibits keeping any other subspecies, which is one of very few genuine attempts anywhere to preserve a honey bee subspecies against hybridisation.
- Management
- Swarm control is the central management task. Weekly inspections through May and June are not optional with Carniolan stock, and artificial swarming or nucleus-making is the usual answer.
- Conservation
- Not threatened, and Slovenia's legal protection of carnica within its borders is a notable model for how a subspecies can be conserved in a world of freely traded queens.
