Top-bar hives
A horizontal hive in which bees build comb down from removable bars rather than into frames. Developed in the 1960s and 1970s as an intermediate technology, with a Greek movable-comb precedent from around 1800, and neither traditional nor a frame hive.

The idea
A trough-shaped box is covered with a row of loose wooden bars. Bees hang comb from each bar, and because the comb is attached to the bar rather than to the walls, a bar can be lifted out with its comb intact. That gives inspection and selective harvesting without frames, foundation, wire, an extractor or any imported component.
The comb is not supported at the sides, so it is fragile and cannot be spun in an extractor. Honey is harvested by crushing and straining, which returns wax rather than drawn comb — a real cost, and the trade-off the design accepts.
Where it came from
The modern top-bar hive was developed and promoted in East Africa in the 1960s and 1970s, explicitly as an intermediate technology between fixed-comb hives and frame hives. The movable-bar principle is older: a Greek basket hive with movable combs is described around 1800, and Dzierżon's movable-bar hive of the 1830s is the same idea in central Europe.
What it is good and bad at
It gives inspection, selective harvest and swarm control without any imported component, and it can be built from offcuts by a village carpenter. Comb built naturally from a bar is also a genuine advantage for keepers who want no foundation in the system.
Against that: unsupported comb breaks, especially in heat and in transport, so the hive is poorly suited to migratory beekeeping; crush-and-strain harvesting destroys drawn comb the colony must rebuild; and horizontal hives are harder to expand than stacked boxes when a strong flow arrives. It is a considered compromise rather than a free improvement.
What this page does not claim
That it is a traditional hive. It is a twentieth-century design with a documented origin, and describing it as traditional erases both its actual history and the hives it was built to replace.
