The tropically adapted African honey bee that, crossed with European stock in Brazil in 1957, produced the Africanized populations of the Americas. In its own range it is simply the honey bee of eastern and southern Africa — productive, mobile, defensive, and superbly adapted to heat, drought and a formidable list of predators including honey badgers, ants and hive beetles.

Can it sting?

Genuinely more defensive than European stock, and the venom is identical — the risk is one of number rather than potency. African beekeepers work colonies at night or at dusk, site apiaries well away from paths and livestock, and use full protection as a matter of routine. This is a management problem with well-established answers rather than an emergency.

How to recognise it

Slightly smaller than European honey bees with variable yellow-brown banding, but visually within the range of the species. No reliable field identification exists; separating scutellata from European subspecies requires morphometrics or DNA.

  • Not reliably identifiable by eye. Any confident visual identification is mistaken.
  • Behavioural signals only: rapid large-scale nest defence, frequent swarming, and readiness to abscond.
  • Nests in a wide range of cavities including small ones, and often in the open.
  • Range: eastern and southern Africa, and — as hybrids — the Americas.

Body length 1014 mm (typically 11.5 mm).

Lifecycle

  1. Rapid build-upShorter worker development time and faster colony growth than European subspecies, which suits an environment where conditions change quickly.
  2. Frequent swarming and abscondingReproduces by swarming several times more often than European stock, and abandons nests entirely in response to disturbance, dearth or parasite pressure.
  3. DefenceResponds to disturbance faster and with far more workers than European stock, and pursues intruders much further. The selective pressure is obvious: honey badgers, ants and human honey hunters have all been taking African colonies apart for a very long time.

Where it lives and what it does

Habitat
Savannah, woodland, farmland and urban areas across eastern and southern Africa, from sea level to high altitude.
Distribution
Eastern and southern Africa, from Ethiopia and Kenya south to South Africa, and west across the Sahel in overlapping ranges with related subspecies.
Behaviour
Fast, mobile and responsive. Everything about it is tuned for an environment where forage moves, predators are large and persistent, and there is no winter to sit out. It also produces well: much of the honey exported from East Africa comes from these bees in traditional hives.
Pollination role
A major pollinator across African agricultural and natural systems, and one that is almost entirely unmanaged in the European sense — the colonies are there whether or not anyone is keeping them.

Very high, and often the dominant pollinator across African farmland.

Stores a harvestable surplus

Productive, and better adapted to tropical heat, drought and local parasites than any imported European stock. Attempts to replace African bees with European subspecies across the continent have consistently failed for that reason.

Relationship with people

How people interact with it
A long and continuous relationship. Log-hive beekeeping across East Africa and the Sahel is documented over thousands of years, and honey has functioned as food, medicine, currency, dowry and ceremonial gift across many of those cultures. The subspecies is also, through one 1957 accident in Brazil, the ancestor of the most sensationalised insect population in the world.
Management
Managed successfully across Africa with techniques suited to the animal: night working, remote apiary siting, full protective equipment, and hive designs that allow harvest without destroying the colony. Applying European management assumptions to African bees is the reliable way to have a bad time.
Conservation
Not threatened, and genuinely valuable as a genetic resource — its heat tolerance, disease resistance and varroa tolerance are all traits European beekeeping would like and has struggled to breed.
