The honey bee that was native to northern Europe before anyone imported anything, and one that has been hybridised close to extinction across most of its range. The dark bee is slow to build, frugal, long-lived, and adapted to cold wet summers and long winters — traits that made it unfashionable when Italian stock arrived, and that look considerably more valuable now than they did in 1900.

Can it sting?

Has a reputation for being more defensive and more prone to running on the comb than Italian or Carniolan stock, and that reputation is partly deserved and partly an artefact of hybridisation — crosses between subspecies are frequently far more defensive than either parent. Well-selected pure dark bee stock is manageable.

How to recognise it

Uniformly dark brown to almost black, with very little pale banding and sparse brown hair. Stockier and broader than Italian bees, with a shorter tongue. The overall impression is of a darker, smaller, hairier bee than the golden stock most people picture.

  • Dark brown to black with no yellow banding at all.

  • Reliable identification requires wing morphometrics or DNA analysis — dark colouring alone does not establish purity, and most 'black bees' are hybrids.

Lifecycle

  1. Slow spring build-upExpands cautiously and late, which loses the early flows and avoids the risk of a large brood nest in a cold snap.
  2. Frugal seasonRears less brood and consumes less than southern subspecies, converting a higher proportion of what it collects into surplus in a poor year.
  3. LongevityWorkers are relatively long-lived, and colonies persist on small populations through weather that would exhaust more prolific stock.

Where it lives and what it does

Habitat
Northern and western Europe: managed apiaries, and feral colonies in buildings, trees and cliffs.
Distribution
Originally from the Pyrenees and Alps north to Scandinavia and east into Russia. Now heavily hybridised almost everywhere, with relatively pure populations surviving in parts of Norway, Ireland, western Scotland, the Isle of Man, Læsø in Denmark and a few French and Swiss conservation areas.
Behaviour
Cautious, frugal and weather-tolerant. It forages in cool damp conditions that keep other subspecies in, which matters in a British or Irish summer, and it is markedly less inclined to rob than Italian stock. Its main practical drawback is that it misses early flows a faster-building subspecies would take.
Pollination role
An effective pollinator in cool maritime climates specifically because it flies in weather that grounds other stock. Its slow build-up makes it less suited to contract pollination of early crops.

What it forages on
Short-tongued, and well suited to the heather, bramble, willow and ivy of northern European landscapes rather than to deep-flowered legumes.

Stores a harvestable surplus

Modest yields in a good year and unusually reliable ones in a bad year, because the colony does not squander stores on brood it cannot support. It is the traditional bee of Scottish heather beekeeping.

Relationship with people

How people interact with it
The native honey bee of northern Europe, kept in skeps for centuries and then largely replaced. Its decline is usually blamed on the Isle of Wight disease of the early twentieth century and the mass importation of Italian queens that followed, though modern work suggests the disease story was overstated and hybridisation did most of the damage.
Management
Kept by conservation breeding groups across Britain, Ireland, Norway and France, using isolated mating apiaries and morphometric or genetic screening to maintain purity. Buying and importing queens of other subspecies into those areas undermines decades of work.
Conservation
Genuinely threatened as a distinct subspecies through introgression rather than through population loss — there are plenty of honey bees, and very few pure Amm. Protected populations exist on islands and in designated conservation areas, and several countries now restrict queen imports into them.
