Moving hives to follow flowering
Carrying colonies to successive flowerings — up a mountain, down a river, across a region — long before lorries. The direct ancestor of industrial migratory pollination, and a practice with a documented history in the Mediterranean, the Nile valley and Arabia.

Practised across a substantial area by many communities, and currently documented.
Traditional transhumance continues in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern beekeeping, and its industrial descendant is a major global practice. Both are currently documented.
The logic
Flowering moves with altitude, latitude and season. A colony left in one place works one flow; a colony moved works several. Where the geography puts several flows within reach — a coastal plain and a mountain, a river running through climate zones — moving hives multiplies the harvest and, incidentally, produces distinct monofloral honeys instead of one mixed one.
Pre-modern movement used boats, pack animals and carts, which constrained hive weight and shape. That is one reason the light, cylindrical, stackable hives of the Mediterranean and the Middle East look as they do.
Where it is documented
- Spain, where transhumant beekeeping between Andalusian rosemary and mountain heather is long established.
- The Nile valley, described by classical authors as hives rafted downstream to follow flowering.
- Southern Arabia, moving colonies between wadis for the sidr flow.
- France, Italy and Greece, moving to lavender, chestnut, fir honeydew and thyme.
What it costs, and what it risks
Moving colonies is work and it is risky: bees are shut in, transported, disturbed and set down in unfamiliar ground, and losses occur. Pre-modern movement by boat or pack animal limited both distance and scale, which is why traditional transhumance operates over tens of kilometres rather than hundreds.
The modern version carries a different cost. Long-distance movement mixes colonies from many operations at a destination, which is an efficient way to move disease and parasites between them, and the concentration of colonies at a single crop for a few weeks is a distinct ecological event in its own right.
What this page does not claim
That the classical accounts of Nile rafting describe pharaonic practice. They are Greek and Roman descriptions and are better attested for the Ptolemaic and Roman periods, which is a common misdating.
