A scent gland on the abdomen used to guide nestmates to a location.

Definition

A bee exposes the gland and fans, releasing an orientation pheromone that smells of lemongrass. It is used at the hive entrance, at water sources and by a settling swarm to gather the colony. It is the reason lemongrass oil is used to bait swarm traps.
