Rope and ladder access
The engineering half of honey hunting. Nests sit on overhangs and forty metres up emergent trees, and every tradition that reaches them has solved the access problem with fibre, wood and nerve.
Current status
Practised, declining
Still practised and measurably contracting — fewer practitioners, less territory, or a shorter season than the earlier record describes.
In current use in Himalayan cliff harvesting and in Southeast Asian tall-tree harvesting, both of which are contracting. Reported in recent fieldwork and in cooperative and development reporting.
The forms
- Rope ladders of twisted plant fibre or bamboo, anchored above a cliff and dropped past the nest, used in Himalayan cliff harvesting.
- Peg ladders: hardwood pegs driven into a trunk in a spiral as the climber ascends, used on emergent rainforest trees too thick to climb directly.
- Notched poles and single-stem ladders leaned against a nest tree, the commonest form worldwide and the least remarked on.
- Fixed climbing loops of fibre used to grip a smooth trunk, and cut steps in bark.
- Suspended platforms and seats worked from above on a rock face.
None of this survives archaeologically. Fibre rots, wooden pegs rot, and the only prehistoric evidence for any of it is pictorial — which is why the Cueva de la Araña painting is argued over: whether the figure is on a rope ladder, on hanging ropes or on plant stems changes what technology is being claimed.
The risk
Falls, not stings, account for most recorded deaths in cliff and tall-tree harvesting. The combination that kills is height, darkness, smoke, an angry colony and equipment made of material that degrades between seasons. Accounts that dwell on the bees are describing the least dangerous part.
Maintenance and reuse
Fibre rope degrades in a season or two of weather and use, so ladders are remade, and the making is part of the practice rather than preparation for it. Peg ladders left in a trunk are checked and replaced before a climb, and pegs that have been in a living tree for a year are not automatically trusted.
Where a site is returned to annually — a cliff face, a known tualang — the access is maintained as an asset alongside the nests themselves, which is another form of the tenure that makes selective harvesting rational.
What this page does not claim
That the equipment shown in prehistoric rock art can be identified. What the Cueva de la Araña figure is climbing has been read as a rope ladder, as hanging ropes and as plant stems, and the difference is the difference between a manufactured technology and a climbed plant.
