Tree beekeeping

Cavities cut into living pines high above the ground, worked from a climbing rope, with the colony otherwise left to itself. The largest beekeeping system of medieval eastern and central Europe, lapsed almost entirely in the twentieth century and deliberately restarted in the last two decades.

Deliberately reintroduced from the 2000s onwards after near-total lapse. Current practice, training programmes and cut trees are documented; continuity with the medieval system is not.

The bee tree

A cavity is cut into the trunk of a living pine, typically several metres up, and closed with a board leaving a small entrance. The tree continues to grow around it. A swarm moves in, and the beekeeper climbs to it once or twice a year using a rope harness and a foot loop, opens the board, smokes and cuts honey comb.

The colony is not managed in any other sense: it swarms, it overwinters or it does not, and it is not fed, treated or inspected. In modern terms it sits between wild colonies and beekeeping, and it produces less honey per colony than a frame hive by a wide margin.

Scale, law and collapse

At its height the system involved very large numbers of cut cavities across the forests of Poland, the Baltic, Belarus, Russia and adjacent regions, held under written rights, and it supplied an international wax trade. Forest beekeepers had defined legal status and their own codes.

It collapsed over the nineteenth and twentieth centuries: forest clearance and management change, the frame hive's far higher yields, the end of the wax economy, and in places outright prohibition of cutting cavities in commercial timber.

What the honey and the yields are like

Yields are very low by modern standards — a fraction of what a frame hive gives — because the colony is unmanaged, swarms freely, and is harvested lightly to leave winter stores. Honey from forest colonies is typically dark, strongly flavoured and sold at a substantial premium as a named product, which is what makes the arithmetic work at all.

There is a second output, and in the medieval system it was the important one: wax. The wax trade is what made forest beekeeping worth regulating, and reading the medieval system as a honey industry gets its economics the wrong way round.

Cultural significance

Forest beekeepers held legal status and written rights, and the resulting codes are among the most detailed bodies of law about bees ever produced.

Pressures and conservation

The revival is tied to old-growth and near-natural forest, and cut cavity trees are now managed as heritage features as well as as hives.

What this page does not claim

Unbroken continuity. The system lapsed almost completely and was reconstructed from documents, from surviving practice elsewhere and from old trees. That is a revival, and it is a more interesting story than a continuity claim.
