Urban beekeeping
Hives on roofs, balconies, allotments and hotel terraces. Genuinely productive, socially useful, and routinely justified with a biodiversity argument the evidence does not support.

Widespread living practice
Practised across a substantial area by many communities, and currently documented.
Current and growing in many cities, with colony registration data available in several countries — which is also the evidence base for the density concern.
Why cities work better than they should
Urban colonies frequently do well. Cities are warmer than the surrounding countryside, gardens, parks, street trees and railway edges provide a long and varied succession of forage, and there is often less pesticide exposure than in intensive arable land. Urban honey is also strongly multifloral and can be excellent.
The practice grew sharply from roughly the 2000s, driven by pollinator concern, corporate and hotel rooftop schemes, and relaxations of local rules that had restricted hive keeping.
The argument that does not hold
The measures that do help wild pollinators are forage and nesting habitat: flowering planting across a long season, undisturbed ground, dead wood, and less mowing. HoneyHQ's gardening section is built on that distinction and this record points at it rather than repeating it.
The practical constraints
- Flight paths, swarming and neighbours, which are the usual sources of complaint and of local rules.
- Water, which colonies need and which in a city means somebody's washing line or a neighbour's pool if not provided.
- Access for equipment and for a full super, which on a roof is a real logistical question.
- Local registration or notification requirements, which vary by country and city and are not universal.
Cultural significance
For many people the only contact they have with beekeeping, and a genuine route into interest in pollinators — which is a good reason to be accurate with them about what it does and does not achieve.
Pressures and conservation
Managed-colony density in cities competes with wild pollinators for forage. The mitigation is planting and habitat, not more hives.
What this page does not claim
That urban beekeeping helps wild bees or supports biodiversity. It adds a managed livestock species to a fixed forage base. The educational, social and honey-producing value is real and is a different argument.
