Yao honey hunting with honeyguides
Honey hunters in northern Mozambique call a wild bird, which leads them to nests it cannot open, and open the nest it found. It is the partnership that was tested experimentally rather than merely observed, and the experiment is why it is here.

Currently practised in the Niassa region and the subject of active field research published within the last decade, which is unusually direct evidence for a present-tense status.
The call and the response
Yao hunters in the Niassa region use a specific trill followed by a grunt, learned from their fathers and used for nothing else. A playback experiment compared it against control sounds matched for acoustic structure, including human words spoken in the same voice and the calls of other animals. The traditional call roughly doubled the probability of being guided and more than doubled the probability of being led to a nest.
A later cross-regional study found that birds respond most strongly to the signal used by their own local human community, which implies learning on the bird's side rather than an innate response to human sound. That puts a learned convention on both sides of the partnership.
The harvest itself
Once the bird has led the party to a nest tree, the hunters smoke the colony, cut into the cavity with an axe and take the comb. The bird waits and feeds afterwards on wax, brood and fragments — beeswax being a food almost no other vertebrate can digest, which is why it is worth guiding for.
The search itself
A hunting party walks and calls, sometimes for hours, before a bird responds. Once guiding begins the party follows over broken ground, and the sequence may continue over a kilometre or more before the bird falls quiet near the nest tree. The whole episode is a search operation in which the bird is the instrument.
Not every call brings a bird and not every guided search ends at a nest. The published figures are probabilities rather than certainties, and the value of the partnership is measured as an improvement in the odds rather than as a guarantee.

Named at the precision the sources support, with the period each record describes. Countries are not cultures, and a monograph dates its fieldwork rather than the present.

Cultural significance
The call is inherited and reserved for this use, which makes it a cultural object as much as a tool, and its regional specificity is what the 2023 experiment demonstrated.
Pressures and conservation
Guiding has lapsed across much of the honeyguide's former range as honey hunting declines. What is at risk is an interaction held in two populations' memory at once, not a species.
What this page does not claim
That the bird understands the call as a request or intends to cooperate. The experiments establish a learned association strong enough to survive controlled comparison, which is what playback with matched controls can show. Nor does this record describe Yao practice generally: it describes honey hunting with honeyguides in one region, as documented.
