Meliponiculture
Keeping stingless bees for honey, wax-resin and pollination, in log sections, clay pots or purpose-built boxes. Practised independently across the Neotropics, Australia, Southeast Asia and parts of Africa, and constrained everywhere by the same biological limit.

Revived
Lapsed and deliberately restarted. Not the same thing as continuous practice, and the difference is recorded rather than smoothed over.
Continuous in some places, revived in others and newly commercial in several. Documented in current research literature and in national regulation of colony keeping and movement.
What makes it different from beekeeping
- Honey is stored in sealed pots of cerumen — a wax and plant resin mixture — not in combs of wax.
- Yields are small. A strong colony may give a few hundred grams to a couple of kilograms a year, against tens of kilograms from an Apis hive.
- The honey is wetter, more acidic and prone to fermenting, which is why several traditions ferment it deliberately.
- The bees do not sting. Some bite, some crawl into hair and eyes, and none of them can be worked at scale by somebody wearing a veil and using a smoker.
- Colonies multiply slowly. A new nest is founded by provisioning it gradually from the parent, so a colony cannot simply be split the way a honey bee hive can.
The binding constraint
Slow colony multiplication is what limits the whole sector. Demand for colonies routinely exceeds what propagation can supply, and the shortfall has historically been met by taking nests from the wild — which puts a practice presented as conservation-friendly into direct competition with the wild populations it depends on.
Where it is done, and by whom
Independent traditions exist across the Neotropics from Mexico to the Gran Chaco, in northern and eastern Australia, across Southeast Asia, and in sub-Saharan Africa. They developed separately, use different genera, and arrived at broadly similar solutions: a cavity of roughly the right size, closed so the colony can be opened at one end without dismantling the brood.
The keeping sector today spans three quite different things. Long-standing rural and indigenous practice; a technical sector with box hives, courses, associations and standards; and a recent commercial boom in Southeast Asia and Brazil built on a price premium. Statements about one of those regularly get applied to the others, and almost none of them transfer.
Pressures and conservation
Nest-tree loss is the primary pressure; taking wild colonies to supply the keeping sector is the secondary one, and the two interact.
What this page does not claim
That stingless bee honey is one product, or that meliponiculture is one tradition. Around five hundred species are involved with different honeys and different management, and a claim about the honey of one genus does not transfer to another.
