Madu kelulut

Stingless bee honey from Malaysia and Indonesia, stored in resin pots rather than wax comb, and markedly more acidic and higher in moisture than honey from honey bees — enough that the two are legitimately different products rather than variations on one. It has become a substantial small-scale industry across Southeast Asia, and it is regularly sold with health claims that outrun the evidence supporting them.

Tropical forest, plantation and garden flora across Southeast Asia. Stingless bees forage over shorter distances than honey bees, so kelulut honey reflects a small local flora closely.

Stingless bees are a distinct group of several hundred tropical species with reduced, non-functional stings. They store honey and pollen in separate pots of cerumen — a mixture of wax and plant resin — rather than in hexagonal comb, and colonies are perennial and much smaller than a honey bee colony.

Harvested by draining or suctioning the resin pots rather than by spinning comb. The high moisture content means it ferments readily, so it is frequently refrigerated or dehydrated — dehydration being a practice with its own arguments attached, since it moves the product further from what the bees made.

What to do with it

Its acidity makes it useful where an ordinary honey would be too sweet — in dressings, in drinks, and anywhere a sharp note is wanted. Treating it as a substitute for ordinary honey on toast usually disappoints.

History and traditional use

Stingless bee keeping — meliponiculture — is very old across the tropics, and the Southeast Asian industry has expanded rapidly since the 2000s from traditional wild harvest into managed hive production.

Established evidence

Stingless bee honey has a genuinely different composition from honey bee honey and does not meet the Codex honey standard.

Moisture content is typically 22 to 30 per cent against 17 to 20 for honey bee honey, pH is lower, and trehalulose — a sugar barely present in Apis honey — can make up a large share of the sugars. The Codex Alimentarius standard was written around honey bee honey and its limits do not fit this product. Several countries are working on separate standards for that reason.

What this does not claim: This does not claim stingless bee honey is inferior, adulterated or unsafe. Failing a standard written for a different bee is a mismatch of definitions, not a defect. It also makes no claim about health effects.

Kelulut honey is widely marketed with specific health claims that go well beyond the published evidence.

Claims about diabetes, cancer and fertility appear routinely in kelulut marketing. There is early laboratory work on trehalulose and on the antimicrobial properties of some stingless bee honeys, and that work does not support therapeutic claims of this kind in people. The honey is genuinely compositionally distinctive; that is not the same as the claims being true.
