Himalayan cliff honey

Strong, dark and complex, with a bitter herbal edge and a slightly astringent finish. Spring harvests are frequently sharper and more bitter than autumn ones.

History and traditional use

Honey hunting from cliffs is among the oldest documented human uses of honey anywhere, with rock art depicting the practice across several continents. The Nepalese tradition is one of the few still practised in something close to its original form, and it is under pressure from tourism, commercialisation and bee decline alike.

Grayanotoxins from rhododendron nectar are well characterised and cause dizziness, vomiting, low blood pressure, and cardiac arrhythmia at higher doses. Cases requiring hospital treatment are documented from both Nepal and Turkey. The toxin content is not predictable from appearance or taste. This is not a folkloric caution; it is a documented clinical hazard.
