The standard instrumental scale for honey colour, running from water white to dark amber and reported in millimetres.

Definition
A honey sample is compared optically against a graded amber wedge, and the reading in millimetres places it in one of seven USDA grades: water white (up to 8 mm), extra white, white, extra light amber, light amber, amber and dark amber (above 114 mm). Colour correlates loosely with intensity and mineral content and predicts crystallisation badly — chestnut is dark and slow to set, rapeseed is pale and sets in weeks.
