Philippine stingless beekeeping
Keeping Tetragonula biroi in boxes across the Philippines, driven by university research programmes and by demand for pollination in mango and coconut. A young sector built partly on older Indigenous knowledge of the same bee.

Practised across a substantial area by many communities, and currently documented.
An active and growing sector at the time of writing, documented in recent agricultural and review literature and in university extension programmes. This is a present-tense claim resting on present-tense sources.
One bee doing most of the work
Philippine meliponiculture is dominated by a single species, Tetragonula biroi, known locally under names including lukot and kiyot. It is kept because it is hardy in managed boxes and because it pollinates two crops that matter enormously in the country, mango and coconut. That is a different foundation from the Yucatán or Brazilian traditions, where the honey came first.
The consequence is a sector where pollination service and honey production are argued for together, and where the published literature is agricultural and institutional rather than ethnographic.
Institutions rather than inheritance
Much of the current activity traces to research and extension programmes — the Regional Apiculture Center at Central Bicol State University of Agriculture in Camarines Sur, and work at the University of the Philippines Los Baños among them — which developed propagation methods and pushed them out to farmers. Colony multiplication by splitting is the binding constraint here as everywhere in meliponiculture, and it is the thing the programmes have concentrated on.
Alongside that, Indigenous knowledge of stingless bees among peoples including the Ibaloi, Aeta and Higaonon is reported in the review literature. Those are distinct peoples with distinct relationships to the bee, and the review record is not detailed enough to describe any of them individually here.
What it produces
Pot honey, pot pollen, propolis and cerumen, in small quantities per colony, sold at prices well above Apis honey — the standard meliponine economics. Philippine T. biroi honey has also been the subject of laboratory work on antibacterial activity, which belongs to the chemistry of the honey and not to a claim about treating anything.
Cultural significance
The visible half is agricultural development. The older half — knowledge of the bee among Indigenous peoples in several parts of the archipelago — is reported but thinly described, and is the part of this subject most likely to be written about badly.
Pressures and conservation
Sourcing colonies for a growing sector means taking them from the wild unless propagation keeps pace, which is the standard tension in meliponiculture and applies here.
What this page does not claim
That box keeping of Tetragonula biroi is a traditional Philippine practice, or that the Indigenous knowledge referred to in the literature belongs to a single culture. The managed sector is recent and institutionally driven, and the Ibaloi, Aeta and Higaonon are distinct peoples whose practices this record does not describe individually.
