How traditional harvesting differs from modern beekeeping
Not a before and after. Wild harvesting, provided cavities, fixed-comb hives and frame hives are points on a gradient of how much a person controls, and most of the world's beekeeping sits somewhere in the middle of it.
The gradient
- RaidingFind a wild nest, take the comb, destroy the colony. Nothing is provided and nothing is returned to.
- ReturningMark a nest, harvest it repeatedly, cut only the honey so the colony survives. The tenure and the restraint arrive together.
- Providing a placeHollow a log, hang a bark cylinder, set a rafter pole or a tikung board. The bees choose whether to move in, and everything else about them stays wild.
- Housing a colonyPut a swarm in a hive, site it, protect it, and harvest by cutting comb. Fixed-comb beekeeping: the colony is yours and you still cannot see inside it.
- Managing a colonyMovable frames, inspection, disease treatment, swarm control, feeding, requeening, extraction without destroying comb.
Rafter beekeeping in the Mekong delta and the tikung boards of Kalimantan sit at step three. Ethiopian hung hives and African bark hives sit at step four. Neither is a halfway house towards something better; each is where the bee, the landscape and the economy put it.
What actually changed with the frame hive

The extractor matters as much as the frame. Returning drawn comb to the colony rather than crushing it roughly doubles effective yield, because the bees do not have to rebuild what they have already spent honey making.
What traditional systems are better at
- Cost, absolutely and comprehensively.
- Suiting bees that abscond. Apis cerana and many African and tropical bees leave a hive that is opened often.
- Working without a supply chain. No foundation, no wire, no imported components, no extractor.
- Surviving neglect. An unmanaged colony in a log or a tree cavity keeps going without anybody visiting.
Why sustainability does not track tradition
Destructive harvesting is thoroughly traditional. European skep beekeeping killed colonies over a sulphur pit every autumn until the nineteenth century, and whole-nest harvesting from wild colonies is documented on every inhabited continent. Selective cutting is also traditional, and it is documented in the same regions.
What predicts which method a community uses is not the antiquity of the practice but whether the harvester expects to come back. Where a nest or a cliff or a rafter board is owned and inherited, selective cutting is normal. Where access is open or temporary, it usually is not — which is why removing customary tenure, including through conservation designation, so often ends good practice.

Developed in the 1960s and 1970s as an intermediate technology, with a Greek movable-comb precedent from around 1800, and neither traditional nor a frame hive.
