Traditional beehives around the world

Logs, bark, clay, straw, cork, gourds and holes in walls. Traditional hive design is not a ladder leading up to the frame hive — it is a set of answers to different climates, different bees and different economies, several of which beat a modern hive on the terms they were built for.

One specification, many materials

A hive has to be a dry, dark, defensible cavity of roughly forty litres with a small entrance, and everything else is refinement. That is a loose enough specification that almost any local material meets it, which is why hive design maps onto what grows and what is worked in a place rather than onto anything about beekeeping.

Fixed comb, and everything that follows from it

Almost all of these are fixed-comb hives: the bees attach comb to the container, so it cannot be lifted out. That one fact explains most of what looks primitive about traditional beekeeping. The colony cannot be inspected, so it is judged by weight, sound and entrance traffic. Honey cannot be taken without cutting, so harvesting is destructive unless the hive geometry allows a partial cut.

The geometry is where the real design thinking is. A horizontal hive worked from one end lets a beekeeper cut honey at the far end and leave brood near the entrance — which is why the horizontal cylinder recurs across the Mediterranean, the Middle East and Africa, and why the modern top-bar hive borrows the same principle.

Why they persist

  • Cost. A log or bark hive is labour and nothing else; a frame hive is money, foundation, wire and tools.
  • The bee. Absconding tropical bees and Apis cerana do poorly under the inspection regime a frame hive invites, and traditional hives suit them.
  • Repair. A hive made from local material can be replaced the week it is damaged.
  • Market. Where honey is sold locally in comb, the extra yield a frame hive gives has nowhere to go.

Fixed-comb hives are still the majority of hives in the world by number. Development programmes have distributed frame hives into traditional systems repeatedly, and the results have been mixed enough that intermediate designs — top-bar hives above all — were invented specifically to bridge the gap.
