Amazonian stingless bee knowledge
The richest honey classifications on earth: indigenous communities across Amazonia distinguishing dozens of stingless bee species by name, each with its own honey, its own uses and its own harvesting rules. Almost none of it is in English.

Folk taxonomies of bees
Ethnobiological work across Amazonia and the Gran Chaco records communities naming and distinguishing many stingless bee species — in some documented cases dozens — with knowledge of each one's nest site, nest architecture, honey character, season and appropriate use. These are working classifications used to decide what to harvest and when, not folk curiosities.
The honeys are treated as distinct products. Some are food, some are medicine for named conditions, some are used ceremonially and some are avoided. That is the strongest available argument against writing about stingless bee honey as one substance.
Harvesting, and what happens to the nest
Wild nests are located in trunks, in the ground and in termite mounds, and opened with axe or machete. Some traditions harvest destructively; some cut carefully and reseal the cavity with cerumen and clay so the colony continues, which is functionally the beginning of keeping. Where nests are transferred home in a log section, the line between harvesting and meliponiculture has already been crossed.
Medicine, ritual and food, kept apart
Documented uses split several ways. Some honeys are everyday food. Some are specific remedies for named conditions, applied or taken in prescribed quantities. Some are used in ritual contexts and some are avoided altogether, in a few cases because the bee forages on plants that make its honey unsafe.
That last point is worth stating plainly: not all stingless bee honey is edible, and communities that distinguish dozens of species distinguish which ones may be taken. Treating meliponine honey as a single wholesome product ignores knowledge that exists precisely because it is not.

Named at the precision the sources support, with the period each record describes. Countries are not cultures, and a monograph dates its fieldwork rather than the present.

Deforestation removes nest trees directly, and the knowledge depends on continued access to forest where the species can be found and distinguished.
