A pale, mild late-summer honey from one of Europe's most damaging invasive plants, and one of the more uncomfortable products in this catalogue. Himalayan balsam produces nectar in extraordinary quantity along British and European riverbanks in August and September, and beekeepers within reach of a stand can take a substantial crop from a plant that conservation bodies spend a great deal of money removing. Bees working it come home dusted white, which is how the flow is usually noticed before the hives are weighed.

The plant arrived in Britain as a garden ornamental in 1839, marketed for the exuberance that has since made it a problem. Its spread along waterways over the following century created a honey crop nobody planned and nobody wants to encourage.

Himalayan balsam is a valuable late nectar source and a seriously damaging invasive plant, and both are true at once.

The plant's nectar productivity and its ecological damage are both well documented. It shades out native riverbank vegetation, dies back completely in autumn leaving bare eroding soil, and spreads by explosive seed dispersal and water. In Britain it is an offence to plant it or cause it to grow in the wild. Its honey value is a genuine fact and not a mitigation.
