History and traditional use

Introduced as a garden ornamental in the nineteenth century, Echium plantagineum now covers millions of hectares of southern Australia. It is toxic to horses and cattle through pyrrolizidine alkaloids, damages pasture, and simultaneously carries a large share of the national honey crop.

Pyrrolizidine alkaloids from Echium plantagineum can transfer into honey.

Echium species contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids, and measurable transfer into honey has been documented. European and Australian food safety bodies have assessed the issue and set guidance, and blending with other honey is the standard mitigation. Levels in commercially blended honey are generally well below levels of concern, and single-source Echium honey consumed in quantity is the situation regulators have looked at.

Echium plantagineum is declared noxious in most Australian states for its toxicity to livestock and its pasture damage, and it is simultaneously one of the largest nectar sources in southern Australia. The 1980s High Court case brought by beekeepers against a biological control release is the clearest demonstration that both interests are real and in direct conflict.
