Warm and caramel-led with a dried-fruit depth and a faint woody dryness. A robust everyday honey rather than a delicate one.

One of the major and least documented honeys of the African savannah, from the bushwillows that run through woodland almost everywhere miombo does not. It is recorded here at genus level because that is how beekeepers actually work it — several species flower together and none is separated in the jar.

A substantial share comes from traditional bark and log hives, which produces excellent honey and makes consistency and traceability harder than in a frame-hive system.

History and traditional use

Honey beer — from Ethiopian tej to Zambian and Tanzanian equivalents — is a very old and continent-wide use of honey, and it consumes far more of the African crop than the table does.
