Oil palm offers bees enormous quantities of pollen and almost no nectar, so honey produced in plantation country comes from the understorey and the margins rather than from the palm — and a colony surrounded by nothing but oil palm can starve while its pollen stores overflow.

History and traditional use
Oil palm expansion is one of the principal drivers of lowland tropical deforestation. The honey produced in that landscape is worth very little against what the forest it replaced was producing, and saying otherwise would be dishonest.
- Palm wine, tapped from the cut inflorescence, is a far older and more widespread product of the same tree and involves no bees at all.
Traditional use records that people have done something, and for how long. It is not evidence that it works.
