Oil-tea camellia honey

Pale, thin and distinctly bitter, with an astringent tea-like finish. Not a beginner's honey and not really a pleasure honey.

A Chinese honey that is genuinely difficult, and unusual for being a major nectar source that is bad for the bees working it. Camellia oleifera flowers across millions of hectares of southern China in late autumn, and the nectar contains sugars honey bees digest poorly enough to cause brood problems and adult mortality.

Apis cerana copes with this nectar considerably better than Apis mellifera does — one of the clearer practical demonstrations that the two species are not interchangeable. Chinese beekeepers manage the flow deliberately rather than simply taking it.

History and traditional use

Camellia oil has been pressed in southern China for well over a thousand years. The honey is incidental to it, and the difficulties it causes colonies are a modern beekeeping problem created by planting the crop at scale.

Colonies foraging heavily on Camellia oleifera are reported to suffer digestive disturbance, brood loss and adult mortality.

Chinese research attributes the effect to oligosaccharides in the nectar that honey bees digest poorly, with Apis cerana affected less than Apis mellifera. The mechanism is not fully settled and the effect size varies between reports.
