History and traditional use

Purple loosestrife arrived in North America in the early nineteenth century in ship ballast and as a garden plant. Biological control programmes using Galerucella beetles began in the 1990s and have measurably reduced infestations in several regions.

Purple loosestrife is a good nectar source and a damaging wetland invasive, and both are true.

The plant forms dense monocultures in North American wetlands, displacing native vegetation and reducing habitat value for waterfowl and amphibians. It also produces abundant nectar over a long late season. Biological control programmes have been established across many states specifically to reduce it. Its value to beekeepers does not offset the ecological cost.
