Japanese knotweed honey
A dark, buttery honey produced across the northeastern United States from Japanese knotweed, and sold under a name that avoids saying so. It comes at the very end of the season, in September, when almost nothing else is flowering, and it is one of the more distinctive American regional honeys — genuinely good, from a plant that costs hundreds of millions to control.

Where it comes from
- Floral source
- Reynoutria japonica, a Japanese pioneer plant of volcanic slopes, introduced to Europe and North America in the nineteenth century as an ornamental.
- Origins
- The northeastern United States, particularly Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey and New England. Produced in Europe too, though rarely named there.

Taken as the final crop of the northeastern season. Beekeepers frequently leave it on the hive as winter stores instead, since it arrives exactly when colonies need to be provisioned.
What to do with it
Assertive enough to hold its own in cooking. It glazes meat well and stands up in a barbecue sauce, where a mild honey would vanish.

History and traditional use
Japanese knotweed reached Europe in the 1840s through the Dutch nursery trade and North America shortly after, planted as an ornamental and for erosion control. The honey is an entirely accidental by-product of one of the most expensive plant introductions in history.
