How honey is produced here

Northland's regenerating scrub is dominated by manuka, which colonises cleared land readily — the honey that transformed New Zealand beekeeping comes largely from land that was once forest and then farm. Colony density during the manuka flow has become a genuine management problem. Like the rest of New Zealand north of 42°S, it is also tutin country: the passion vine hopper's honeydew on tutu can carry the neurotoxin into honey, poisonings have been reported in Northland, and honey from risk areas harvested between January and June is tested against a 0.7 mg/kg limit.
