An Appalachian honey that beekeepers actively avoid, because mountain laurel nectar contains grayanotoxins — the same class of compounds behind Turkish mad honey and Himalayan cliff honey. The bees
Mountain laurel has a remarkable pollination mechanism — its anthers are held under tension in pockets in the petals and flick pollen onto a visiting bee when triggered. Bumblebees are its principal natural pollinators. Adult honey bees are not harmed by the toxins, which pass through into the honey.

Mountain laurel honey can contain grayanotoxins and cause poisoning.

Grayanotoxins from ericaceous nectar are well characterised and cause dizziness, nausea, vomiting, low blood pressure and cardiac arrhythmia. Poisoning cases from Kalmia and Rhododendron honey are documented in the North American and European clinical literature. The toxin cannot be reliably detected by appearance or taste, and heating does not remove it.

What this does not claim: This does not claim all honey from Appalachian apiaries is affected — the great majority is not, because beekeepers manage around the flow. It also does not claim mountain laurel harms bees; adult honey bees are unaffected.
