African stingless bee honey

Sharp, fruity and faintly smoky, with the acidity common to all stingless bee honey. Descriptions vary widely because the species and the flora both do.

The least documented stingless bee honey of the three continents that produce it. Africa has its own meliponine bees — Meliponula and Dactylurina above all — kept in log hives and harvested from wild nests across the equatorial belt, and the product is almost entirely absent from the international literature.

There is very little published compositional work on African meliponine honey, and these ranges are borrowed from the Neotropical and Asian literature rather than measured on African species. Equatorial forest, woodland and farm-margin flora. African meliponines nest in tree cavities, in the ground and in termite mounds, and forage close to the nest.

The equatorial belt from Cameroon and the Congo basin east to Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, and south into Zambia.

Timing varies enormously by latitude and rainfall pattern. Yields are very small — often under a litre a colony.

The bees
Meliponula species are stingless and defend by biting. Several nest in termite mounds or in the ground rather than in trees, which is a genuinely different arrangement from the Neotropical meliponines and makes wild harvesting harder.

Overwhelmingly harvested from wild nests or from simple log hives, frequently alongside Apis honey from the same forest. Colonies in termite mounds are destroyed rather than managed in most wild harvesting.

History and traditional use

African meliponines are the least studied of the world's three stingless bee faunas, and several species are known mainly from museum specimens. The gap in the record is a gap in research effort rather than in the bees.
