Veronica species, formerly Hebe, principally Veronica salicifolia and its relatives, on scrub, forest margin and riverbank throughout New Zealand.

Hebes are among the most important nectar sources for New Zealand's small native bee fauna, which comprises around 28 species mostly in the genera Leioproctus and Lasioglossum.

Hebes are pioneer shrubs of regenerating land, so the resource expands where scrub is allowed to return and disappears where it is cleared.

The koromiko leaf remedy is among the better-documented Māori medicinal uses, with a continuous record into the twentieth century.

Koromiko's traditional medicinal reputation belongs to the leaf, not to the honey.

Māori medicinal use of koromiko is documented for the leaf and leaf-bud, prepared as an infusion or chewed, principally for diarrhoea and stomach complaints. It was supplied to New Zealand troops for this purpose in both world wars. There is no corresponding traditional or evidential basis for the honey having the same effect, and the two should not be conflated.
