A honey from the tree that is the foundation of Hawaiian forest and one of the central figures of Hawaiian tradition. Ohia lehua produces a pale, delicate honey with a fine spontaneous set, and it comes from forests currently being killed by a fungal disease named, in Hawaiian, Rapid Ohia Death — which makes it a honey whose supply is a conservation question rather than a market one.

Honey bees are introduced to Hawaii and are latecomers to a system built around native birds. Ohia lehua evolved with Hawaiian honeycreepers, many of which are now extinct or endangered, and the honey is produced in a forest whose original pollinators are largely gone.

History and traditional use

Ohia is the first tree to colonise new lava flows and the dominant species of Hawaiian forest, which gives it a foundational position in both the ecology and the tradition of the islands. The story of Ohia and Lehua, whose separation is marked by the flower, is among the best known in Hawaiian legend.

Real studies exist and point somewhere, but they are small, in vitro, in animals, or not yet replicated. Direction is not the same as a result.

Ohia forest, and therefore this honey, is threatened by a fungal disease that has killed large areas of the tree since 2010.

Rapid Ohia Death is caused by two species of Ceratocystis fungus, first identified on the Big Island in 2010 and since confirmed across substantial areas. It kills mature trees within weeks of symptoms appearing. Quarantine measures restricting the movement of ohia wood and requiring the cleaning of tools and footwear are in force. The threat to the honey is real and secondary to the threat to the forest.
