Honeydew honey

New Zealand's great forest honey, and one of the most remarkable ecological products in this catalogue. Scale insects embedded in the bark of southern beech extrude long waxy threads tipped with a droplet of honeydew, so that a beech trunk glistens and the forest smells of sugar. Bees, birds, insects and introduced wasps all compete for it, and the wasps are winning.

The bees
Honey bees collect the droplets from the waxy anal filaments of the scale insects. Native birds — bellbirds, tui and kaka — depend heavily on the same resource, and introduced German and common wasps consume an enormous share of it, which is one of New Zealand's most serious invertebrate conservation problems.

The resource is under severe pressure from introduced Vespula wasps, which consume a very large share of the honeydew in some seasons and outcompete both bees and native birds. Wasp control programmes in beech forest are among New Zealand's larger invertebrate conservation efforts.

History and traditional use

The beech honeydew system is one of the most productive in any temperate forest, and its ecological importance — to birds as much as to bees — was only properly documented in the later twentieth century.

Introduced wasps consume a very large share of New Zealand beech forest honeydew and outcompete native species for it.

Introduced Vespula wasps reach extraordinary densities in New Zealand beech forest — among the highest recorded anywhere — and studies have shown they remove the great majority of standing honeydew crop through much of the season. The effect on native birds and invertebrates that depend on the same resource is well documented and is the basis of large-scale wasp control programmes.

What this does not claim: This does not claim honey bees are harmed more than native species, nor that wasps are the only pressure on beech forest. Predation of native invertebrates by the same wasps is a separate and equally serious issue.
