A Southeast Asian plantation honey with an unusual mechanism behind it. Like most Australian wattles, mangium offers almost no floral nectar — the sugar bees collect comes from glands on the leaf stalks, secreted to recruit ants as bodyguards. The result is a honey much closer to a honeydew than to a floral one.

Where it comes from

Floral source
Acacia mangium, planted over millions of hectares of pulpwood plantation. The honey comes from extrafloral nectaries on the phyllodes rather than from the flowers, which is why the crop does not coincide with the bloom.

Extrafloral nectaries evolved to recruit ants against herbivores, not to attract pollinators. Bees are exploiting a plant defence system rather than a reward, and there is no pollination relationship in it at all.

History and traditional use

Extrafloral nectaries are widespread across the wattles and were understood as an ant-recruitment defence long before anyone thought of them as a honey source. That bees make a commercial crop from a plant's security system is a genuinely odd thing.
